Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Parodied on SNL

The comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live recently addressed the growing concerns and warnings surrounding artificial intelligence (AI). In a segment aired this past weekend, cast member Jane Wickline performed an impression of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.

Weekend Update anchor Michael Che introduced the skit by noting Amodei's participation in a press tour where he seemingly agreed with claims that AI could pose an existential threat to humanity. Wickline's portrayal of Amodei depicted halting speech and internal monologues reminiscent of the character Gollum from "The Lord of the Rings." At one point, the character declared, "AI is the devil and I its maker."

Wickline-as-Amodei assured the audience that AI executives "are all on the same page here: We do not condone what we are doing." The sketch continued with the line, "AI is not a weapon, it’s a tool: A tool for building weapons. And I urge you to urge me to stop."

When discussing the potential benefits of AI, such as curing diseases like cancer, the fictional Amodei stated, "Put it this way: In 10 years, there’s about a 10% chance that cancer won’t be a problem for anyone." The implication being that AI development, despite potential risks, is proceeding regardless.

The SNL sketch served as a cultural commentary on the intense public debate and high-stakes discussions surrounding AI development and its future implications.
