Anthropic donates $20 million to AI regulation advocacy group

AI company Anthropic announced on July 21 that it plans to donate an additional $20 million to Public First Action, a political group that advocates for government-imposed safeguards on AI.

This latest contribution brings Anthropic's total donations to the group to $40 million. The increase comes as the debate surrounding AI regulation intensifies, particularly with the U.S. midterm elections approaching and AI legislation remaining a politically charged issue.

"We've long argued that frontier AI companies should be transparent about what their models can do and how they’re managing the risks," Anthropic stated in a release. "We’ve supported newly passed laws in several states that require greater transparency for AI developers. But given how fast the capabilities of the most powerful models are advancing, transparency alone is insufficient."

Anthropic's active role in supporting regulation stands in contrast to the varied approaches taken by other major tech companies. OpenAI, Google, and Meta have all adopted different stances on government-imposed limitations, ranging from open support to opposition or caution.
