Anthropic files S-1 for initial public offering

Anthropic has released its S-1 filing, initiating the process for a public market debut. The document outlines a period of rapid financial expansion, with the company reporting $16.3 billion in revenue for the first half of 2026, a 14-fold increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Analysts suggest the firm may achieve an annualized revenue run rate of $110 billion by year-end.

Despite high revenue growth, profitability remains a challenge. The company recorded an operating loss of $693 million for the first half of 2026. A significant portion of the total net loss—reported at $80 billion—is attributed to technical accounting adjustments related to convertible notes and derivative liabilities rather than direct operational costs.

The filing also details the ownership structure, noting an unusually balanced distribution among the seven co-founders, each holding roughly equal stakes in Class A stock. This departs from the typical industry model where the CEO often retains a significantly higher percentage of ownership.

Risk factors comprise nearly 100 pages of the 335-page prospectus. Beyond standard concerns regarding debt service and talent retention, Anthropic explicitly cites potential security risks, including the possibility that advanced future models could be leveraged by malicious actors to develop biological or chemical weapons.
