AI company Anthropic has introduced the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a new framework intended to enable AI agents to control physical devices. This development aims to expand AI capabilities beyond digital tasks into the physical world.
The MHS provides a set of standardized drivers that simplify the process for AI agents to connect with and manage various hardware components. Initially offered as a "research preview," the MHS is primarily aimed at assisting scientists in setting up complex experimental apparatus. It offers a common interface and data format, allowing devices to communicate without the need for custom-built integration software.
Anthropic suggests that implementing the MHS could reduce the time required for experimental setup from weeks or months down to "hours or minutes." The company believes this standardization could significantly accelerate scientific discovery and development processes.
The inspiration for MHS reportedly came from observing neuroscientist Arco Bast's work. Anthropic technical staffer Alek Kemeny noted how Bast integrated various experimental components, such as lasers and microscopes, through a unified interface. Kemeny stated that the MHS could enable AI to manage any scientific experiment in a similar fashion.
