Anthropic launches new AI model rivaling Fable 5 at lower cost

AI company Anthropic announced its latest model, Claude Opus 5, on Friday, stating it is its best-performing and most cost-effective offering across industry benchmarks. The company claims Opus 5 outperforms its previous Claude Fable 5 model in coding and knowledge work evaluations.

Opus 5 is priced at half the cost of Fable 5, with input tokens costing $5 per million and output tokens $25 per million. Anthropic noted that Opus 5 is not state-of-the-art for "risky, dual-use capabilities," such as cybersecurity.

The release comes as businesses are increasingly cost-conscious, hesitant to invest in expensive AI models without a clear return on investment. Anthropic and competitors like OpenAI are seeking to address this demand by focusing on value.

"Enterprises are looking for value," said Dianne Penn, Anthropic's head of product management for research, to CNBC. "If a cheaper model isn't delivering comparable quality, it's not useful." Anthropic faces competition from other major tech firms and Chinese startups offering more affordable options.
