AI company Anthropic is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to establish its first data center in Japan, according to Nikkei Asia. The deal, which involves NTT DATA, is expected to be finalized within the current fiscal year, with potential partial operation starting as early as 2028.

The facility, intended to house significant AI computing power, will be located in Osaka. It is projected to have a capacity of 500MW, and the construction cost alone is estimated to exceed 1 trillion yen (approximately $2.8 billion USD). The center will later be equipped with a substantial number of high-value chips.

Initially, the AI data center will utilize off-grid power sources, such as on-site generation through fuel cells. This approach allows flexibility while the necessary electrical infrastructure is developed and put in place.

This development is part of a broader trend of major AI companies expanding their data center footprint globally. Japan has been actively seeking to become a hub for AI development and related infrastructure, attracting significant investments in the sector.
