Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has informed investors of plans to significantly expand its computing power capacity. The firm aims to reach approximately 5 gigawatts (GW) of available computing power by the end of 2024 and double that capacity by the end of 2025.
This expansion effort is seen as a direct response to the ongoing competition in the AI sector, particularly with OpenAI, which has historically led in large-scale computing infrastructure for AI model training and deployment. Current estimates suggest OpenAI is also targeting 5 GW of capacity this year and 10 GW by the end of next year.
Anthropic's shift towards aggressive capacity building marks a change from its previous stance. CEO Dario Amodei had previously expressed concerns about competitors acting "too aggressively" and taking on excessive risk regarding computational resource spending.
The substantial investment in computing power is crucial for developing and deploying advanced AI models. Anthropic's planned build-out is intended to ensure it has the necessary infrastructure to compete effectively in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
