Anthropic Releases Cheaper, Faster AI Model
AI company Anthropic has launched Sonnet 5.5, a faster and lower-cost artificial intelligence model. This is the company's second release since its CEO called for a slowdown in advanced AI development.
Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic announced the release of its new Sonnet 5.5 model on Monday. The model is positioned as a faster and more cost-effective offering, coming less than a week after the company introduced its more powerful, and more expensive, Opus 5.5.
The launch of Sonnet 5.5 aligns with CEO Dario Amodei's recent public calls for AI companies to decelerate the pace of development for their most advanced systems. Amodei's remarks gained significant attention amidst growing concerns from researchers about the potential risks associated with rapidly advancing AI capabilities.
Anthropic states that Sonnet 5.5 does not push the frontier of AI capabilities but offers improved performance in coding and knowledge-based tasks compared to its predecessor. The company highlighted that the model is priced at half the cost of Opus 5.5 and requires fewer processing units per task, making it more economical for users.
"Sonnet is really for the cost-conscious customer where they might not need as much intelligence," said Theo Chu, a research product manager at Anthropic. "It might be routine tasks that just need execution, but don’t need that judgment that Opus can bring." The company also emphasized enhanced cybersecurity features in Sonnet 5.5. The model is available across major cloud platforms, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.
