Anthropic Releases Claude Sonnet 5.5 with Speed and Cost Improvements

AI company Anthropic has released an updated version of its mid-tier artificial intelligence model, Claude Sonnet 5.5. The company states the new model operates significantly faster and at a substantially lower cost compared to the previous generation.

Sonnet 5.5 is positioned as an ideal assistant for everyday tasks, including writing code and producing office documents. It succeeds Sonnet 5, which was released approximately three months ago and highlighted efficient agent deployment with lower costs than competitors.

The core advancement in the 5.5 version is its speed. Anthropic claims Sonnet 5.5 is 30% faster than the previous version, with notably lower token consumption. While Sonnet models typically have lower performance capabilities than Opus models, their responsiveness can make them more practical in certain scenarios. Anthropic's own benchmark tests indicate that Sonnet 5.5 outperforms Opus 5.5 in agent coding tasks, potentially due to its ability to run multiple agents concurrently without exceeding cost limits.

The company also reports that Sonnet 5.5 possesses robust capabilities in both network defense and offense, reportedly matching the performance of Opus 5. This makes 5.5 the first model in the Sonnet series to implement the same network security mechanisms as the Fable and Opus models.

Anthropic has also announced plans to release a new version of its smallest model, Haiku, in the coming weeks. The AI landscape continues to see rapid model development, with major players like OpenAI and Meta recently introducing new models for various applications.
