AI company Anthropic has released its Model Hardware Standard (MHS), signaling its expansion into the domain of Physical AI. This new standard allows AI systems to perceive, act within, and learn from the physical world, moving beyond traditional digital environments.
The MHS functions as a unified control and communication standard, enabling AI agents to operate devices equipped with programmable interfaces. This facilitates the automation of complex workflows, allowing AI to manage multiple instruments, such as microscopes and robotic arms, potentially without significant human intervention.
Anthropic has piloted the MHS standard in core technology sectors including biopharmaceutical research, quantum computing, and advanced manufacturing. Early tests indicate a significant acceleration capability for various processes.
For instance, pharmaceutical giant Genentech reported that by allowing AI direct control over multiple, heterogeneous experimental devices via MHS, the overall development and execution time for their automated dose-response curve experiments was reduced by two-thirds.
