According to industry reports, Anthropic's billing platform team is conducting a "build-vs-buy" assessment. This evaluation seeks to determine which aspects of financial processing can remain outsourced and which critical capabilities the company needs to build in-house.
The billing platform team is responsible for converting user service consumption into billable charges. This encompasses tracking usage, calculating prices, generating invoices, managing payments and financial reconciliation, and identifying anomalous usage. The system functions similarly to a "smart utility meter and billing office" for AI services.
Anthropic has posted several job openings related to its billing platform, including roles for Staff Software Engineers and Technical Program Managers. These positions involve pricing, payment infrastructure, contracts and entitlements, revenue streams and reconciliation, and preparations for promotions and commercialization. The company is actively recruiting talent from the payments industry to enhance its capabilities in billing, risk control, and collections.
With rapid growth and complex billing requirements, developing an in-house infrastructure could provide Anthropic with greater control over pricing strategies, metering, and reporting. The company currently offers various subscription tiers and API usage billed per token. Building its own system would allow Anthropic to more directly design and iterate on its billing processes, discount structures, and reporting workflows.
