Anthropic's AI model Claude assists in its own development
AI firm Anthropic has announced that its Claude model is helping the company develop the next, more intelligent version of itself. The model currently leads 26% of Anthropic's research and development under human supervision.

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has stated that its AI model, Claude, is playing a role in the development of the next generation of the model. According to the company, Claude is currently leading 26% of Anthropic's model research and development. This means the model can complete a significant portion of tasks "end-to-end from a high-level prompt" while remaining under human oversight.
Approximately 90% of the company's research and development is conducted in "collaboration" with Claude. Anthropic clarified this means the model can handle "large chunks of work under close human direction." This announcement comes amid calls from prominent AI figures, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, for a slowdown in AI development due to safety concerns.
Anthropic has also emphasized the importance of transparency in AI development, suggesting that accelerating self-improvement in AI models could make them harder for humans to understand or control. The company is urging other AI developers to share similar metrics publicly to allow for better tracking and comparison of AI progress.
The model's contribution to research has grown rapidly. In February, Claude led none of the research work, but by August, its share had increased to a quarter. Anthropic also detailed its oversight measures, reporting that approximately 30,000 agents were engaged in research and engineering tasks as of August. The company has also committed to incorporating external third-party evaluators to monitor its safety efforts.
