Jewish communities in Saxony, Germany, are grappling with a challenging security situation amidst ongoing antisemitic incidents. While the number of reported cases has seen a slight decrease from peak levels in 2023 and 2024, it remains significant at 222 incidents.
Thomas Feist, the state representative for Jewish life in Saxony, described the predicament for the communities. "On one hand, more is being done for security, which is necessary. On the other hand, the communities have always seen themselves as open meeting places. These two aspects are contradictory," Feist told MDR KULTUR. The situation is further complicated by the current lack of community spaces in Dresden and Chemnitz due to ongoing synagogue renovations.
The report indicates that the situation is heavily influenced by developments in the Middle East and geopolitical events. The visibility of Jewish life appears to correlate with increased difficulties and harassment.
Saxony's Minister of Culture, Conrad Clemens, expressed deep concern over the report's findings, emphasizing the continued importance of educational initiatives and consistent legal prosecution.
