Anya Sebton Reflects on Two Decades of Design Collaboration with Lammhults

Designer Anya Sebton has maintained a collaborative relationship with Swedish furniture company Lammhults for more than two decades, producing pieces that integrate the company's identity with her problem-solving design approach.

Sebton's journey with Lammhults started during her studies. While needing assistance to build prototypes for her degree project, she approached Lammhults, drawn to the work of previous designers Börge Lindau and Bo Lindekrantz. Unexpectedly, her prototypes, intended for modification after a nomination for the Young Nordic Design award, directly led to a production contract under new CEO Marcus Larsson. The initial outcome was the modular furniture piece Multiplicity, which secured a substantial order from Arlanda Airport.

Sebton defines her role as an investigative designer focused on solving problems rather than producing for production's sake. Her aim is for her furniture to serve a purpose, filling a need for the client and addressing user challenges. An example is the Add stool, designed for open spaces and informal meetings, which uses its tilted seat to support the user by interacting with their body structure.

Inspiration for Sebton stems from problems, discussions with furniture users, and the expertise of Lammhults collaborators. She also draws from nature, its materials, and forms. Sebton emphasizes the collaborative nature of design, viewing it as a team effort where collective knowledge is crucial. She highlights the contributions of upholsterers and the mechanical workshop, who played key roles in developing innovations like the magnetic linking system for the Area furniture series.

Sebton strives to create timeless design, characterized by a purity of form that complements its environment without dominating it. She maintains that timeless pieces should not be anonymous but possess a distinct signature, often subtly expressed in the furniture's frame.
