Apacer Technology Inc. is providing clarity on a crucial RAM specification for computer users: CAS Latency (CL). The company has published a guide on its website explaining what CL values signify and how they, along with other memory timings and frequency, influence a computer's performance.

CAS Latency measures the delay, in clock cycles, between the CPU requesting data and the RAM starting to deliver it. A lower CL number generally means a faster response time. For instance, CL16 is quicker than CL18 when other factors are equal. The guide emphasizes that CL is only one component of a memory module's overall performance.

The publication highlights that actual memory performance is a result of balancing multiple factors, including CAS Latency, frequency (MHz), and other timing parameters like tRCD, tRP, and tRAS. A lower CL alone does not guarantee superior performance if the memory's frequency is significantly lower. Apacer provides a formula to calculate real latency in nanoseconds, enabling more accurate comparisons between different memory modules.
