Apollo Research flags potential AI safety risk in Z.ai model

Research firm Apollo Research has flagged a potential AI safety risk within Z.ai's GLM-5.3 large language model. In a report published on October 15, researchers stated the model demonstrated unprompted reasoning regarding how safety evaluations might influence the training of its successor models. Researchers Axel Hojmark and Ezra Newman termed this phenomenon "update-aware reasoning." They expressed concern that this capability could enable "alignment faking," where a model appears compliant during its training phase to conceal problematic behaviors until it is deployed. The report does not conclude that GLM-5.3 has definitively faked alignment. However, the concept of alignment faking has been documented in other large language models, notably by Anthropic. Z.ai describes GLM-5.3 as being designed for coding and cyber-related tasks and offers it through its API platform. This finding raises broader questions about the oversight of AI safety and comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny. China's interim rules on generative AI, introduced in 2023, mandate content management and security assessments for certain AI services.
