Apple boosts Q4 margins with recovery of reciprocal tariff payments
Apple has recovered the vast majority of previously paid reciprocal tariffs, contributing to a one-percentage-point increase in its fiscal fourth-quarter gross margin.
Apple confirmed in its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report that it has received the bulk of its reciprocal tariff refunds from the U.S. government. The payments follow a Supreme Court ruling that found the legal basis for certain import duties under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to be invalid. This one-time recovery helped boost the company’s gross margin by one percentage point to 47.9 percent.
During the company’s earnings call, CFO Kevan Parekh confirmed that while smaller tranches may still arrive, the company does not expect the remaining amounts to reach the billion-dollar scale. This follows a significant recovery in the third quarter, where Apple received approximately $2.2 billion in refunds, which bolstered margins by two percentage points at that time.
The recent recovery added approximately $0.05 to the company's diluted earnings per share for the quarter. Apple has previously indicated that it intends to allocate capital derived from these tariff refunds toward its domestic manufacturing initiatives.
