Apple deploys scanning technology to combat device return fraud

Apple is rolling out a new diagnostic system at its retail stores to verify the integrity of sealed iPhones, aiming to curb return fraud involving tampered packaging.

25 October 2026

Apple has begun deploying a specialized diagnostic system to its retail locations to address persistent issues with return fraud. The technology allows staff to verify the contents of sealed iPhone boxes without breaking the packaging, according to recent reports.

The initiative follows a surge in fraudulent returns where customers replace original devices with weight-matched objects before resealing the boxes. Previously, staff were required to open returned packaging to verify product authenticity, which devalued the inventory and increased operational overhead.

The new hardware utilizes diagnostic technology similar to Apple’s existing 'Presto' system, which was originally developed to perform software updates on inventory while items remained boxed. By scanning the devices internally, the system confirms the presence and status of the hardware inside.

The equipment reached Apple retail stores earlier this month and is currently being integrated into standard operations. If successful, the system is expected to streamline the return process and minimize financial losses associated with compromised packaging.
