Apple expands Live Activities to macOS menu bar

The latest developer beta of macOS 27.3 integrates Live Activities, allowing Mac users to track real-time app updates directly from the menu bar.

5 November 2026

Apple has introduced Live Activities to the macOS menu bar in the first developer beta of macOS 27.3. The feature allows users to monitor ongoing processes—such as Apple Music playback, timers, and voice recordings—without needing to switch between open applications.

Previously limited to newer MacBook Pro models with ProLED displays, the feature is now rolling out to a wider range of Apple Silicon-equipped Mac computers. This includes older models and devices that lack the Dynamic Island interface, effectively standardizing the experience across the Mac lineup.

In addition to first-party system apps, Apple has opened the functionality to third-party developers. This integration allows external applications to display real-time updates for services like ride-sharing, food delivery, or file transfers directly at the top of the screen. The update is currently available for developers to test ahead of a broader release.
