Apple HomeView operating system details emerge with restrictive software architecture

Apple's upcoming smart home hub, HomeView, runs on a highly locked-down version of tvOS that prohibits third-party application installation.

2 November 2026

Developers examining early builds of Apple’s upcoming HomeView smart home hub have discovered a strictly controlled operating system environment. Unlike the iOS or iPadOS ecosystems, the device currently lacks an App Store and does not support the installation of third-party software, signaling a shift toward a closed architecture for the new category of home hardware.

Technical findings reveal that the system, which is based on a version of tvOS, relies on CarPlay application programming interfaces (APIs) to display content. Internally referred to as "PebblePlay," this framework restricts application functionality to audio and video services, leaving other categories like navigation or communications unsupported at this stage.

Despite these restrictions, the user interface remains consistent with other Apple hardware, offering features such as adjustable transparency effects and facial recognition for identity verification. Apple has not yet commented on whether the platform will eventually open to broader developer access.
