Apple integrates Alibaba's Qwen model for China AI rollout

Apple announced that it will introduce artificial intelligence capabilities to the Chinese market, starting with a developer beta release on November 4. The integration relies on Alibaba’s Qwen model to support local functions within Siri, text editing tools, and visual processing systems.

Following the initial testing phase, the company plans a wider deployment scheduled for December as part of the iOS 18.2 update. Users will have the option to authenticate using either a Qwen account or Apple’s own sign-in protocols to access document analysis and content generation features.

This deployment marks a significant shift in Apple's approach to the Chinese AI market, where regulatory hurdles often complicate the rollout of Western-developed generative models. By partnering with a local entity like Alibaba, Apple aims to maintain consistent service parity in its largest international market. Future updates are expected to expand these capabilities to other Apple operating systems pending local regulatory approvals.
