Apple integrates invisible SynthID watermarking for AI-processed images

Apple has updated its operating systems to apply invisible SynthID watermarks to images modified or created using its suite of AI tools.

7 November 2026

Apple has introduced SynthID watermarking within its latest software updates, including iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 27.2. The integration covers multiple Apple Intelligence-powered tools, specifically Image Playground and Image Wand, as well as photo editing functions such as Clean Up, Extend, and Spatial Reframing.

The watermarking process is triggered not only by fully generative AI tasks but also whenever a standard photograph is altered using these specific AI tools. While the markers are imperceptible to human users and do not affect image quality, they remain detectable through web-based SynthID verification tools.

This move aligns with broader industry efforts to manage the provenance of synthetic media. Earlier this fall, the company debuted similar pixel-level data verification for the iPhone 18 Pro series. By embedding these invisible markers, Apple aims to provide a reliable method for determining whether images have been subjected to AI manipulation, addressing concerns regarding the authenticity of digital content.
