Apple Introduces In-House C2 5G Modem in New iPhone Models

Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo models, all equipped with the company's internally designed C2 5G modem. This shift signifies a move towards greater component integration within Apple's product ecosystem.

The C2 modem is reported to improve cellular connectivity quality and reliability through AI enhancements. Compared to the previous C1X chip, the C2 offers up to a 50% increase in upload speeds and a 15% reduction in power consumption. It also supports 5G mmWave technology, which delivers high-speed connections in dense urban areas.

For the US market, the C2 modem supports n258, n260, and n261 mmWave bands, along with sub-6GHz 5G utilizing 4x4 MIMO. Apple's Chinese website indicates that C2 for the Chinese market supports 5G (sub-6 GHz) with 4x4 MIMO technology.

Alongside the new iPhones, Apple also introduced its custom-designed N1 wireless networking chip. The N1 supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, enabling high-speed local area networks, short-range wireless connectivity, and smart home device integration.

This new modem technology is part of Apple's ongoing strategy to reduce its reliance on third-party chip suppliers like Qualcomm. While this represents a significant in-house development, reports suggest that some iPhone 18 Pro Max variants might still utilize Qualcomm modems, indicating a phased transition.
