Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America

Apple Maps has officially changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America within the United States, as reported by Bloomberg. The company follows Google in renaming the Great Lake after updates to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

The change aligns with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump amid a trade dispute with Canada. Google updated its map shortly after the name change went live in the U.S. GNIS, while Apple waited a period before implementing the adjustment.

According to Bloomberg, the Canadian version of Apple Maps continues to display "Lake Ontario" when users navigate the area. International versions of the app now show both names. This incident highlights how geopolitical tensions can influence digital mapping services.

Both Apple and Google have previously altered names of other geographic features within their mapping applications.
