Apple Ordered to Pay $5.7 Billion Over Haptic Technology Patents
A US jury has ordered Apple to pay over $5.7 billion to Taction for infringing patents related to haptic technology.
A jury in San Diego has ordered Apple Inc. to pay more than US$5.7 billion to Taction, a San Diego-based company that develops haptic technology. Taction develops technology for products including headphones and gaming headsets.
The jury found that Apple's Taptic Engine in iPhones and Apple Watches infringes two Taction patents. Apple has stated that it intends to appeal the ruling. The company argued during the trial that its Taptic Engine differs from Taction's technology and does not utilize it.
Taction sued Apple in 2021. The case was revived in 2025 after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturned a 2023 ruling by a San Diego federal judge that Apple had not infringed the patents.
The award is significantly higher than the US$634 million Masimo won in a separate patent dispute concerning Apple Watch.
