Apple has filed a patent for a system that can assess, in real-time, whether to interrupt a user's current activity or allow them to maintain focus. The application, filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in February 2026 and published in August 2026, outlines a mechanism for devices to observe user behavior.
The system would utilize predefined rules to judge if an interruption is warranted based on the user's actions. For instance, if a user is scrolling content extensively, consistently viewing a specific application, or repeating a pattern flagged by the system, the device might decide to present a notification. Conversely, if the user's behavior does not trigger any rules, the system would refrain from intervening, allowing the user to continue uninterrupted.
This patent application also touches upon a feature to compile a user's recent device activity into a concise summary. This aims to prevent disruptions during ongoing tasks, enabling users to review missed information after completing their operations.
Apple already has features that align with the patent's concepts. iOS 18.1 introduced an AI-powered notification summary that condenses multiple alerts into a single line, and the 'Reduce Interruptions' Focus mode filters notifications deemed unimportant. The new patent could further refine these features, potentially by factoring in the user's current context when evaluating the importance of a notification.
