Apple Postpones Plan to Replace AppleCare Staff With AI

Apple has indefinitely postponed plans to replace approximately 5,000 AppleCare customer service positions with artificial intelligence. The company had previously considered the move as part of a service upgrade.

Apple has indefinitely postponed plans to significantly reduce its AppleCare customer service workforce by replacing human agents with artificial intelligence. Reports citing Bloomberg's Mark Gurman indicated the company had considered cutting around 5,000 jobs as part of an initiative to leverage AI for support tasks.

The proposal aimed to use AI to handle a portion of phone and online support inquiries for AppleCare, which provides troubleshooting and technical assistance for Apple products. The AI system was designed to answer product-related questions and offer step-by-step troubleshooting guides. Media outlet MacRumors noted that Apple has already begun upgrading customer service lines in the U.S. and Canada, where callers might be directed to an AI support assistant.

If the AI assistant could not resolve an issue, it was programmed to transfer the customer to a human specialist. Customers also retained the option to directly request speaking with a live agent.

However, Gurman reported that Apple has now decided to shelve these workforce reduction plans. While the integration of AI into customer service operations is expected to continue, the company is no longer pursuing these specific staff cuts at this time.
