Apple Releases Security Update for Vulnerability Exploited in Sophisticated Attacks

Apple has released security updates for its iOS and iPadOS operating systems to patch a vulnerability that cybercriminals may have exploited in sophisticated attacks. The company announced the release of iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1, addressing a single security flaw.

The vulnerability, affecting the CoreGraphics component, could have allowed attackers to execute arbitrary code on a compromised device. Apple stated it is aware of reports that the issue may have been exploited in "extremely sophisticated attacks" against specific individuals on older versions of iOS. The company did not disclose further details about the targets or the scope of the exploit.

This patch is significant for users still running iOS 26, as Apple's own data indicates that 86 percent of iPhones and approximately 79 percent of iPads introduced in the last four years are still operating on this older version, despite the release of iOS 27. Some enterprise customers may intentionally delay major OS upgrades for compatibility testing.

Apple has increased its deployment of cybersecurity updates recently, in part due to the growing threat of AI-powered malicious tools. Cybersecurity experts universally recommend keeping devices and software updated with the latest patches to ensure optimal security. This fix follows shortly after Apple patched another critical bug that reportedly allowed malicious actors to steal information from iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.
