Apple reverses course with touchscreen MacBook Pro

Apple has officially introduced the MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR display, marking the company’s first integration of touchscreen technology into its laptop lineup. The move follows over a decade of public opposition from Apple executives, who previously labeled touchscreen laptops as ergonomically inefficient and less effective than traditional indirect input methods like trackpads.

Historically, Apple leadership argued that touch interfaces on laptops caused user fatigue—often described as "gorilla arm." As recently as 2021, executives maintained that the Mac was optimized for non-touch input while touch was reserved for the iPad. The shift in direction appears to be driven by changing user habits, with Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, noting that younger creators increasingly expect touch capabilities.

To accommodate the hardware change, Apple has updated MacOS with new gesture APIs and visual elements, such as Dynamic Island integration and magnification for menu items. However, the company has stopped short of merging its laptop and tablet product lines, maintaining the traditional clamshell form factor.

The new MacBook Pro is positioned as a high-end offering with a starting price of $2,899. Whether Apple will extend touchscreen options to the rest of its lineup remains to be seen.
