Apple Seeks Proposals for Interop 2027 Initiative

Apple's WebKit team is seeking proposals for its Interop 2027 initiative, which aims to enhance the consistency of web experiences across various browsers. This effort seeks to reduce instances where websites render differently depending on the browser used, improving the development and user experience.

The Interop project began in 2022 as a collaboration involving companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla. Its primary goal is to ensure that modern web technologies are supported uniformly across different web browsers. Each year, the project identifies new focus areas based on community suggestions and tracks implementation progress using shared test suites.

Results from the Interop 2025 project showed significant progress, with the percentage of selected tests passing across all browsers jumping from 29% at the start of the year to 97% by year-end. The Interop 2026 focus includes 20 areas, such as CSS features and technologies like the Navigation API, View Transitions, WebRTC, and WebTransport.

Submissions for Interop 2027 are open on GitHub from September 3rd to September 23rd, 2026. Apple requires that proposals are based on stable, mature web standards and are testable. Each submission should address a specific interoperability issue or a narrow set of related features, and must include evidence of the problem's impact on developers and users.
