Apple Shifts Resources From Car Project to AI Chips

Apple is redirecting significant resources previously allocated to its defunct car project towards the development of its upcoming M7 and M8 series AI chips. Technologies and research acquired during the decade-long Apple Car initiative, which was officially shelved in 2024, are now being integrated into the production pipeline for new Mac chips designed for artificial intelligence applications. The estimated investment in the car project surpassed $10 billion.

Following the project's termination, some employees involved were transferred to the AI division under John Giannandrea. This team is now leveraging the accumulated expertise in chip development from the car project to accelerate the creation of the M7 and M8 chip lines. These new chips are specifically targeted to enhance AI capabilities in Apple's products.

The Apple Car project, initially conceived as a major endeavor, faced significant challenges leading to its discontinuation. CEO Tim Cook had previously described the project in 2017 as "the mother of all AI projects," highlighting its ambition and complexity. The company's decision to reallocate these resources indicates a strategic shift to capitalize on existing research for its current product strategy.

Compared to previous generations like the M6 series, which featured a more limited range of chips, the focus on the M7 and M8 series signifies Apple's commitment to boosting AI performance. This move aims to equip its Mac computers with advanced processing power for increasingly sophisticated AI-driven tasks and applications.
