Apple Tested Stylus for Foldable iPhone, But Device Unlikely to Ship With Pen Support
Apple explored using an Apple Pencil with a foldable iPhone prototype, but practical testing revealed challenges with magnetic attachment and screen durability, making pen integration unlikely for the initial release.
Apple has investigated the use of an Apple Pencil stylus with a foldable iPhone, though the device is unlikely to ship with pen support, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.
Gurman revealed that Apple at least explored a shorter prototype of the Apple Pencil that could magnetically attach to the side of the phone. However, during testing, the company found that the magnetic pen attachment was not a harmonious fit with the foldable form factor.
If the Apple Pencil were attached when the screen is folded, it would align with the longer side of the device. Users would then be required to remove the pen before unfolding the phone, presenting a usability hurdle. Additionally, Apple expressed concerns that the foldable screen's structure might not be rigid enough, fearing the Apple Pencil could leave marks on the inner display.
While Apple has not ruled out the possibility of releasing a foldable iPhone that supports an Apple Pencil in the future, current indications suggest the first generation will not include stylus support. This development contrasts with the stance of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who famously derided styluses at the original iPhone's launch.
