Apple Updates App Store Rules Against AI Apps Generating Intimate Images

Apple has tightened its App Store rules to explicitly prohibit AI-powered "nudify" apps that generate non-consensual intimate images of individuals. This update addresses growing concerns over the misuse of AI for creating unauthorized deepfakes.

The rule changes follow considerable criticism leveled at Apple earlier this year when X users utilized the Grok AI to create non-consensual, sexualized deepfakes, including those of minors. While Apple did not immediately remove X or Grok from its platform, it informed senators that it had threatened to do so.

Protests occurred at Apple's WWDC event in June, where demonstrators called on the company to "remove Grok, X, and all nudify technology from the App Store." In July, a San Francisco city attorney ordered Apple to remove 13 "nudify" apps, which were alleged to violate privacy and spread harmful content.

These new guidelines aim to prevent such applications from being available on the App Store and to bolster user privacy protections against digital exploitation. Apple's action comes after public pressure and legal inquiries regarding the proliferation of AI tools capable of generating inappropriate content without consent.
