Apple Updates App Store Subscription Cancellation Process
Apple has introduced a new 'retention' feature allowing developers to present custom offers or messages to users when they attempt to cancel subscriptions.
Apple has updated its App Store guidelines to allow developers to implement retention messaging for subscribers attempting to cancel auto-renewing services. Through the App Store Connect portal, developers can now deploy text, images, or special offers—such as discounted rates or extended trial periods—when a user initiates the cancellation process.
To facilitate this, Apple has released a Retention Messaging API. This tool allows developers to segment users based on their subscription history and status, enabling them to trigger specific promotional content before the cancellation is finalized. Developers maintain control over eligibility criteria and the frequency of these messages.
While this update provides developers with a mechanism to reduce churn, industry observers note potential friction for users. The addition of promotional prompts during the cancellation flow may complicate the user experience, potentially acting as a deterrent to quick exit processes. Apple confirmed that this feature does not prevent users from ultimately terminating their subscriptions.
