Apple updates iPadOS 27.2 to streamline split-screen multitasking

Apple has introduced a simplified split-screen interface in the iPadOS 27.2 update, reducing the number of steps required to arrange two applications side-by-side.

3 November 2026

Apple released iPadOS 27.2, introducing a revised workflow for multitasking on iPad devices. The update addresses user feedback regarding the split-screen setup process, which previously required multiple manual gestures to position two apps simultaneously.

Under the new system, once a user snaps the first application to the left or right side of the display, the iPad automatically presents the home screen or app picker. This transition allows the user to select the second application directly, removing the need to navigate through the dock or manually resize windows as required in iPadOS 26 and earlier versions.

The update focuses on operational efficiency, aiming to reduce the friction involved in managing concurrent tasks. By automating the transition between the primary window and secondary app selection, Apple intends to shorten the time users spend managing their workspace layout.
