Apple updates policy for AI-powered dating and companion apps
Apple now requires developers to disclose if their apps use AI for romantic connections, enforcing an 18+ age restriction for such software.

Apple has announced stricter requirements for dating applications and AI-driven companion services. Starting November 16, developers must declare whether their software utilizes artificial intelligence to facilitate romantic connections, including features involving virtual companions or human-to-human matchmaking.
Under the new guidelines, any app that offers sexual or romantic content via AI must enforce a minimum age rating of 18+. Developers are required to provide these declarations during the app submission process, with a final compliance deadline set for January 12, 2027. While mainstream dating apps typically already operate under 18+ restrictions, the policy shift targets the emerging sector of AI companion apps, which often see high engagement from teen demographics.
Industry observers note that the move aligns with growing scrutiny regarding the impact of AI on adolescent mental health. Research from groups such as Common Sense Media suggests that a significant percentage of teenagers regularly interact with AI companions, prompting warnings about the risks of emotional dependency and exposure to inappropriate content.
