Apple Watch Adds AI Features with Privacy Focus

Apple has unveiled the new Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Apple Watch Series 12, incorporating two new AI tools: Live Rewind and Siri Recap. These additions reposition the wearables from primarily health-focused devices to include always-listening AI assistants on the wrist.

The new AI features, termed "Audio Intelligence" by Apple, include automatic music identification and sound event detection with user alerts for sounds like alarms or a crying baby. More novel are Siri Recap, which generates AI-powered summaries of conversations, and Live Rewind, which transcribes the last 15 seconds of dialogue into text on the watch display.

Apple emphasizes that all these AI features are opt-in and require user activation. Critically, all audio data is processed locally on the device within a secure enclave on the S11 chipset. The 15-second buffer for Live Rewind is continually overwritten and never sent to Apple. Siri Recap processes raw audio on-device, sending only the summarized text to Apple's Private Cloud Compute, from which Apple itself cannot access the data.

Privacy considerations extend to bystanders. Siri Recap does not record conversations or identify speakers and is designed to omit sensitive information from summaries. Furthermore, activating Live Rewind triggers an audible alert, notifying those nearby that the feature is in use, ensuring awareness and transparency.
