Apple's iOS 27 brings back the classic Dogcow character

Apple released its latest operating system update, iOS 27, to the public yesterday. The headline feature of this release is the new Siri AI chatbot, which offers a completely revamped agentic companion for iPhone users.

Alongside the new AI assistant, Apple has also reintroduced a beloved character from its computing history: the "Dogcow." Officially named Clarus, this hybrid dog-cow glyph originated in the 1980s Mac OS and was used to indicate page orientation for printing. The unique creature quickly became a cult favorite among developers.

After being removed from the operating system for years, the Dogcow has returned with the release of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. Users can find the Easter egg by navigating to Settings > Appearance > Liquid Glass. Continuing to scroll down past the "The Rainbow" heading will reveal the letters "Moof!" in the search field, followed by a modern render of the Dogcow.

The inclusion of the Dogcow Easter egg in Apple's latest operating systems signifies a nostalgic nod to the company's past. While Apple has removed many of its once-iconic hidden features over the years, some persist, reflecting a tradition of playful elements within its software.
