Apple's New iPhone Camera Mode Aims to Prove Photos Aren't AI-Manipulated
Apple is introducing a new "Reference Image" feature for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. The mode is designed to verify that photographs have not been manipulated by artificial intelligence.
Apple is launching a new method to verify the authenticity of photographs against potential AI manipulation. The feature, named "Reference Image," will be included with the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
This new mode utilizes the device's updated camera sensor to "sign every pixel it sees," according to the company. Once the camera captures this signed sensor data, Apple's Private Cloud Compute system will process it into an "unalterable reference image." This reference image will be accessible within the Photos app.
Users will be able to compare the generated reference image with other versions of the same photo to detect any unauthorized edits. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will only authenticate images when the camera is set to Reference mode. The feature is expected to be available with the latest Pro models.
