ARD Mediathek in May 2026: From Deepfakes to Music Industry Power Dynamics

ARD Mediathek is set to release five new documentary films in May 2026, exploring a range of contemporary and personal subjects.

The topics span the technological and ethical challenges of deepfake technology, power structures within the music industry, and the experiences of individuals on the autism spectrum. One film delves into the background of the group Boney M.'s success and the role of producer Frank Farian, clarifying the members' actual vocal contributions.

Another documentary, "Leben im Spektrum" (Life on the Spectrum), follows the daily lives of individuals on the autism spectrum. It depicts their challenges in relationships, work, and education, while also challenging preconceptions and showcasing their pursuit of independent lives.

Additionally, the Mediathek will feature a documentary examining the world of deepfakes, and "Digital Aliens โ€“ Die neue Ungleichheit" (Digital Aliens โ€“ The New Inequality), which addresses the disparities created by the digital realm. The classic documentary "Chris the Swiss" explores a personal story about the lasting impact of war.

These documentaries will be available on ARD Mediathek starting May 2026, with some remaining accessible until May 2027. MDR facilitates their distribution by providing direct viewing links.
