ARD's Mystery Series "House of Yang" Explores Past Secrets
ARD's new mystery series "House of Yang" is set in the Black Forest and delves into a complex family secret and intercultural dynamics. The series is now available.

ARD's new miniseries "House of Yang," written by Stefanie Ren and directed by Mia Spengler, was released on the ARD media library on October 9. The series won SWR's "Tief im Südwesten" idea competition, where it stood out among 180 other submissions for its mystery plot, intercultural story, and Black Forest setting.
The series follows Jessie (Elisa Hofmann) who returns to her childhood home in the Black Forest with her teenage daughter Mila (Purnima Grätz) to settle her inheritance. However, the house is steeped in past secrets, and Jessie's younger sister Isabel (Xue Lili Pautze) disappeared from the house when she was a child. The girl was never found, with some claiming the house "swallowed" her.
"House of Yang" also delves into the house's multicultural history. After World War II, Asian immigrants moved into the house, facing racist prejudice. The series reveals that Isabel was not the first child to disappear from the house; a similar incident occurred at an earlier time.
The series combines elements of psychological thriller, exploring generational trauma and the significance of identity. It aims to depict how the house's past influences the present and future lives of its inhabitants.
