ArkBio Receives FDA Clearance for Phase II Influenza Prevention Trial

Shanghai-based Ark Biopharmaceutical (ArkBio) announced on October 12, 2026, that it has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin a Phase II clinical trial for its investigational drug, AK0406. The drug, a long-acting antiviral drug-Fc conjugate (AFC), is being developed for the prevention of influenza.

The trial, set to commence in the United States, aims to address gaps in current influenza prevention strategies. While seasonal vaccination remains primary, factors such as evolving virus strains and variable immune responses can limit its effectiveness, particularly in vulnerable populations. The CDC reported at least 32 million illnesses and 380,000 hospitalizations in the U.S. during the 2025-2026 influenza season.

AK0406 is designed by ArkBio to combine direct antiviral activity with Fc-mediated immune clearance. Preclinical studies have demonstrated broad-spectrum and potent antiviral activity against both influenza A and B strains. The drug's development has previously included a Phase I trial in Australia and IND clearance in China.

The planned U.S. Phase II trial will be a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. It will evaluate AK0406's efficacy in preventing influenza, alongside assessments of its safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and immunogenicity. Data from this trial will guide future global development strategies for AK0406.
