Arsenal Unveils New Font Named Rocastle After Former Player

Arsenal Football Club has launched Rocastle, a new font inspired by blackletter typography. This release is part of a wider brand identity strategy aimed at modernizing the visual expression of the 140-year-old English football club.

The new typeface is named in honor of the late Arsenal player David Rocastle (1967–2001). It was designed by David Rudnick and Léa Bruneau, and was unveiled at a pop-up exhibition at the Design Museum in London. Rudnick, an Arsenal supporter, has also been instrumental in developing the club's new bespoke font book over the past four years.

The Rocastle font seeks to blend a distinctly English aesthetic with the club's identity. It combines traditional blackletter elements with modern features, such as variations in line weight and swashes reminiscent of pennants. The typeface is intended to be versatile, serving as both a visually striking display element and a legible text font.

Arsenal began its typography overhaul in 2022. Rocastle represents the "culture" pillar of the club's brand, focusing on football's intersection with fashion, art, and music. It aims to reflect the club's deep heritage and future aspirations. While some online commentators have raised concerns about legibility, Arsenal emphasizes that Rocastle is intended as a decorative accent for special moments rather than for extensive text.
