Artist Presents Coffee-Painted Portrait of Pope Francis at Vatican

Artist Ali Karatay, founder and CEO of Erguvan Art & Academy, has presented a portrait of Pope Francis created using coffee at the Vatican. The artwork, inspired by love, peace, and shared human values, was delivered to the Pope's Private Secretariat in June 2022. Karatay views art as a universal language that connects individuals across cultures and beliefs.

Karatay's choice of coffee as a medium is integral to the artwork's message. Coffee, a globally consumed beverage, symbolizes conversation, hospitality, and connection. By utilizing coffee's natural tones, Karatay aims to visually express unity and bring people together through a shared experience. "I believe art has the power to move beyond what divides us and reveal the humanity we share," Karatay stated.

Erguvan Art & Academy, established by Karatay, is an international youth art movement focused on fostering creativity, education, and collaboration through over 30 projects. In August 2026, the organization opened its first physical art center in Woodland, California. Its motto, "Art Will Save the World," reflects its commitment to leveraging art for connection, healing, and peace.

The portrait was presented to the Pope as part of Erguvan Art & Academy's broader efforts to demonstrate how even simple mediums can convey meaningful messages across cultural boundaries.
