Asia Biogas prioritizes climate action through biogas production

Asia Biogas, a key player in Southeast Asia, identifies Climate Action (Sustainable Development Goal 13) as its number one priority. The company stresses that without radical climate action, progress on the other 16 goals will be impossible.

The company points to anaerobic digestion of agricultural waste as the most impactful and cost-effective method for climate action in tropical regions. This process involves microorganisms, such as archaea and bacteria, degrading organic waste in oxygen-free environments to produce biogas, primarily methane. Southeast Asia's extensive agriculture, particularly rice and palm oil production, generates substantial organic waste suitable for biogas capture.

Asia Biogas has successfully implemented biogas projects in Thailand, where many cassava starch factories now use biogas for thermal energy and renewable power generation. The company's current strategic focus is on the palm oil industry in Indonesia, where an estimated 90% of mills do not capture biogas from their wastewater. This industry's wastewater alone is estimated to emit over 40 million tCO2e annually, a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

Beyond climate mitigation, biogas production supports other sustainable development goals, including clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and responsible consumption and production. Asia Biogas believes biogas offers unparalleled positive impacts across all 17 sustainability goals in the Southeast Asian context.
