Asia Pacific Internet Governance Academy Celebrates 10 Years
The Asia Pacific Internet Governance Academy (APIGA) is celebrating a decade of training young leaders for internet governance in the Asia-Pacific region. Over 359 participants from 32 economies have completed the program since its 2016 inception.
SINGAPORE, July 27, 2026 – The Asia Pacific Internet Governance Academy (APIGA) is marking ten years of preparing young talent to shape the future of the Internet in the Asia-Pacific region. Launched in 2016, the program has successfully trained over 359 participants from 32 economies, fostering a growing network of future decision-makers, technical experts, academics, and civil society leaders in internet governance.
The milestone was commemorated with a special ceremony during APIGA's 10th annual session in Busan, South Korea, on July 24, 2026. The initiative aims to equip the next generation of leaders with the necessary knowledge and practical experience to contribute to maintaining a secure, stable, and accessible global Internet.
APIGA is a five-day annual workshop focused on Internet governance. It is co-organized by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the Korea Internet & Security Agency, along with regional Internet organizations. The program provides participants with hands-on understanding of how the Internet functions and its consensus-based, bottom-up governance model.
Building on its success, the program expanded in 2024 with the introduction of "APIGA Local" editions. These localized formats offer shorter, tailored training sessions in local languages, adapting to on-the-ground realities and issues. This expansion has already reached ten economies, significantly increasing engagement opportunities for young people in the region. As APIGA enters its second decade, it remains committed to developing leaders for an open, secure, and interoperable global Internet.
