Aspora Campaign Prompts UK's Indian Diaspora to Check Indian Bank Accounts
Fintech Aspora has launched a UK-wide campaign using a letter that mimics an official notice to prompt the Indian diaspora to review their Indian bank accounts for regulatory compliance.

Fintech firm Aspora has initiated a nationwide campaign in the United Kingdom designed to alert Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to regulatory requirements concerning their bank accounts in India. The campaign, titled "Chitthi Ayi Hai" (A letter has arrived), centers on a letter that is intentionally designed to appear as an official legal notice, though it is not.
The campaign aims to encourage NRIs who have relocated abroad to review and convert their Indian savings accounts to NRO accounts, as mandated by India's Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Failure to comply, often due to lack of awareness, can result in substantial penalties, potentially amounting to three times the account balance.
The letter serves as a conversation starter, prompting recipients to question whether they might face a real issue, even if the letter itself is not official. Aspora positions its NRI account as a solution and encourages account reviews. The campaign employs a blend of curiosity and mild concern to ensure the critical message is addressed.
Aspora founder Parth Garg highlighted that many NRIs live abroad with undeclared Indian bank accounts without realizing the implications. "No NRI family should have to open that envelope. That's why we sent ours first," Garg stated. The campaign also features advertisements on UK radio stations, influencer and journalist reactions to the letter, and offers incentives for opening an Aspora NRI account.
