ASSA ABLOY: BIM Adoption Faces Slow Progress in Switzerland

The adoption of digital technologies, particularly Building Information Modeling (BIM), is progressing slowly within Switzerland's construction sector despite recognized potential. The nation aims to align with European leaders like the UK and Scandinavia in implementing BIM to bolster industry competitiveness.

In an interview, architect and BIM specialist Birgitta Schock notes a similarity to a German study, indicating that BIM's full potential is not yet being realized. While some companies are embracing digital transformation, others remain hesitant to move away from traditional methods.

Schock attributes this reluctance to several factors. Switzerland's cultural fragmentation, varying cantonal practices, and a lack of transparency in procurement models hinder the development of a unified digital approach. A traditional reluctance to share business strategies also impedes consensus.

Successful BIM implementation hinges on individuals understanding its long-term benefits, Schock explains. While digital tools are common in personal lives, a similar mindset is often lacking in business. Solution-oriented forums, where companies collaborate to find optimal digital project solutions, appear more promising than fragmented, technically focused software offerings.
