ASSA ABLOY clarifies European standards for panic exit devices

Locking solutions provider ASSA ABLOY has released information clarifying the European standards governing panic exit devices for emergency exits. The guidance focuses on EN 1125 and EN 179 standards, along with the mandatory CE marking, aiming to assist building owners and specifiers in selecting appropriate safety hardware.

The company explains that different devices are required depending on the installation context. The EN 1125 standard applies to devices operated by a horizontal bar, typically installed in public buildings where users may not be familiar with emergency procedures and panic is a higher risk. These are often referred to as panic exit devices.

In contrast, the EN 179 standard covers emergency devices operated by a lever handle or push pad. These are intended for buildings with restricted access, where occupants are trained personnel familiar with evacuation procedures. Both standards mandate that devices carry a CE mark, signifying compliance with European safety regulations.

ASSA ABLOY highlights that CE marking has been compulsory for devices on escape routes in Italy since 2005, with a deadline for replacing non-compliant devices in 2013. The selection between EN 1125 and EN 179 hinges on factors such as the building type, occupancy load, and specific security requirements.

The company provides a range of products certified under both standards and advises users to consult the specific requirements of their installation. The guidance serves to demystify the regulatory landscape for panic and emergency exit devices.
