ASSA ABLOY Clarifies Residential Security Door Classifications
ASSA ABLOY has provided guidance on the classification and use of security doors in residential buildings. The RC classification system categorizes doors by resistance level, with advancements enabling more sophisticated solutions.
ASSA ABLOY, a provider of door opening solutions, has issued information clarifying the classification and purpose of security doors, particularly in the context of residential buildings.
Previously associated primarily with high-security locations like banks and military facilities, security doors are now widely adopted in residential construction. This trend is driven by increased break-ins and greater consumer awareness. New housing developments are commonly equipped with these doors, which are categorized using the European RC (Resistance Class) standard. This classification ranges from RC1 to RC6, indicating the difficulty level for an intruder to breach the door, with RC5 and RC6 typically reserved for applications like safes.
The RC classification system assists consumers in making informed purchasing decisions. RC1 offers basic protection against physical force. RC2 provides resistance against simple tools. RC3 is designed to withstand more forceful tools, such as crowbars. Higher classifications, RC4 through RC6, offer progressively greater protection against more sophisticated methods and tools, including powerful electric equipment at the highest levels.
The lock mechanism is a critical component of any security door. ASSA ABLOY offers multi-point mechanical locks as well as electromechanical options that can be operated via keypads, apps, or other electronic means. Alongside security, attributes like fire resistance (EI) and acoustic insulation (Rw) are increasingly important considerations in door selection.
ASSA ABLOY emphasizes that proper installation by authorized personnel is crucial to ensure the door meets its rated security level and to maintain the manufacturer's warranty. As technology advances, security doors are also becoming more aesthetically versatile, integrating seamlessly with modern design and smart home systems.
